SUMMARY

Assist and perform manual and machine operator tasks related to the set-up, maintenance, and operations of the press. Operate a 6-color sheet-fed printing press.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the make-ready and operation of the offset printing press.
  • Perform the standard pressroom checklist to determine quantity to be Printed, stock specifications, colors and special printing instructions.
  • Inspect and mount plates.
  • Mount blankets and apply packing sheet to blanket cylinder to build up the blanket to the manufacturer’s specification with reference to the bearer height.
  • Measures paper thickness and adjust back pressure between blanket and impression cylinders according to thickness of paper stock.
  • Have knowledge of fountain solution PH, conductivity and alcohol substitute percentages and the levels in the reservoir. Maintain the ink levels in the ink fountains.
  • Must be proficient at operating steam feeders with continuous feed systems.
  • Must be physically able to load forty inch coated and un-coated paper.
  • Assist with changing out worn rollers and adjusting pressure to manufacturers specification.
  • Performs proper and required maintenance as well as cleaning of press.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Requires 3 – 5 years experience as a First or Second Press Operator, knowledge of the mechanics and capabilities of presses.  Need to be able to accurately distinguish color variation and other print imperfections. Perform rule-ups, page pagination and the reading of the job jacket.   UV, KBA 105, and/or Heidelberg experience is a plus.
